I acquired my Taylor 514CE during the recording sessions for "Surface Tension". My phone rang and it was my friend Scott from Competition Music, a guitar store in Fort Worth, Texas popular with lots of the locals. Scott asks me if I'm interested in adding to my Taylor collection (I had one at the time! A 414CE). He said he had just taken receipt of a used Taylor, and would I like to come see it? I dropped what I was doing, drove over to his shop and played the guitar for just a few minutes. I mean, I knew right away, I just didn't want to put it down. He quoted a very reasonable price, and I walked out with it. About 3 months later I was playing in a Fort Worth Starbucks (remember when Starbucks had live entertainment?) when this fellow walks up to me and said "that guitar looks very familiar. Did you by any chance purchase it at Competition?" Shocked, I said yes, I did. He smiled, then rattled off the serial number, and sure enough, the same guitar! He introduced himself as Joseph Spence. He was very gracious to me, and said he was glad the guitar found a good home. Before he left, I invited him to drop by the shop sometime. About a week later he did come by, and I had a picture taken of the two of us with the guitar. The 514CE is my favorite of my four Taylors. I love the balance, feel and tone of this instrument.
